James Oglethorpe
James Oglethorpe was a military leader who established the colony of Georgia. He was born on December 22, 1696 in London, England to a wealthy family. During his young twenties, he was part of the parliament. He saw the poor and unfortunate people in debtors prison and wanted them to be set free. He asked King George for a colony in the New World and made the Charter of 1732. He landed in Savannah, Georgia in early 1933 after being granted the colony of Georgia by King George the second. He spent the next decade (1933-1943) in Georgia, enhancing political and economic development and gaining support from European countries. Soon he came back to Great Britain and died on June 30, 1785.
Tomochichi
Tomochichi was a Creek Leader and was chief of a town near Savannah. He gave his land to James Oglethorpe in order to keep peace between the two. The peaceful relationship lead to great success in Georgia. He went to Great Britain for a token of peace. He died on October 5, 1739. Historians are trying to find out how old he was.
Charter of 1732
The Charter of 1732 was permission from King George for James Oglethorpe and 20 other trustees to create the colony of Georgia. It has sets of rules such as no alcohol, land ownership, and no slavery. It also states that the colony of Georgia has three reasons why it is formed: Charity, Economics, and Defense. Charity is to help the people in debtors prison to start a new life. They though Georgia's agriculture would help Great Britain boost their economy. Georgia served as a buffer colony, defending South Carolina.
Mary Musgrove
Mary Musgrove was an American translator for the Creek Indians. She also negotiated with the British for land. Musgrove made the Indians and the British closer together. She was born to as half Indian and half American. She started to live with the Indians 1732. She was very useful, for she made the Europeans side with the Indians. She died in the summer of 1765.
Reasons For Settlements
The colonist settle in the New World for many different reasons. Some wanted to start a new life in the Americas. Missionaries came from Europe to convert people into Christianity. Like the Pilgrims, some people were actually runaways so the can escape from country's religions. But, most people wanted to see riches. Many people came to Georgia to plant new crops. The colony of Georgia was made for three reasons: Charity, Economics, and Defense.
City of Savannah
The city of Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia. The city was established 1773. Hernenado De Soto landed on Savannah which ended the prehistoric era in Georgia. Indians such as the Yamacraw lived here. Also James Oglethorpe landed in Savannah and made peace with the Indian Nations. It was an important port during the Civil War and the American Revolution. Also it was Georgia's first capital. It is in the Coastal Plains region of Georgia.
