Irony
Irony is when an author uses a phrase of words to define something else. For example, the ground is hard as snow. Although the ground was claimed to be hard, snow is soft. In literature, there are three kinds of irony: situational, dramatic, and verbal. The example above was verbal irony. Situational irony is a surprise, like "The Escape". He was supposed to escape, but didn't escape. Dramatic irony is the opposite of situational irony.
