33b - evaluate the Trustee Period of Georgia’s colonial history emphasizing the role of Salzburgers, Highland Scots, malcontents, and Spanish threat from Florida
Salzburgers
Ebeneezer
In 1731, many protestants got exiled from Austria. Some Austrians went to Prussia, and others went to Holland. Only three hundred went to the Americas. The ones that went to America were the Salzburgers. Like the Pilgrims, they escaped for religious purposes. They were brought by Oglethorpe. At first they lived with Oglethorpe and his men, but the Salzburgers moved away to Ebeneezer. They survived in a harsh region in Georgia where there was little water and poor soil. But they thrived, better than a lot of other communities.
Malcontents
The Malcontents Complaining
The Malcontent were people who made violent complainants about the colony. There prisoners, protestants, colonist, and Roman Catholics that complained. The colonist didn't like the fact the colony had so much restrictions put by the British. They wrote petitions and sometimes resorted to violence. Many religious groups didn't like the fact that they didn't have the right to assembly or to speak. They failed in the end, for the British still maintained power.
Highland Scots
Highland Scots
Highland Scots were from Scotland. They were brought by James Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe wanted them because they were good defenders. One of the main reasons for Georgia was to defend South Carolina and their silk. The Highland Scots set up in Darien and helped the British win the Battle of the Bloody Marsh. The Highland Scots were on good reason for the colony of Georgia.
Spanish Threats from Florida
Spanish Trying to Invade
The colony of Georgia was made to protect South Carolina and their silk. Beside border battles, there was only one Spanish attempt to invade Georgia; the battle was known as the Battle of Bloody Marsh. It was between the British and the Spanish. The British was lead by James Oglethorpe, who was also the founder of Georgia. The battle was an easy victory for the British, for they plenty of more men than the Spanish. After the battle, the Spanish wasn't a threat to the British anymore.
