Poetry Terms:
Alliteration - an occurrence of the same letter or sound. Ex. Six silly sisters selling shoes
Couplet - two lines of verse that rhymes. Ex. The mouse was mad The cat was sad
Hyperbole - an exaggerated statement. Ex. I have a ton of homework
Imagery - visually descriptive. Ex. When you think of Star Wars, you think of lightsabers and spaceships
Metaphor- a word or a phrase that means something but is written in a way that the meaning and the phrase does not match. Ex. The cat was like a shadow
Rhyme Scheme - the pattern at the end of a line that makes up the poem. Ex. I like a coat. I'd hate to have a boat.
Internal Scheme - the pattern in the middle of a line. Ex. The boy uttered but then shuddered.
End Scheme - the pattern at the end of the line. Ex. I am a rat. I am a bat.
Onomatopoeia - a word that is spelled the way it sounds. Ex. OWW! or POW!
Personification - a human attribute given to non-humans. Ex. The bag of Oreo spoke to me.
Repetition - the word or phase that repeats. Ex. The boy was ugly. The boy was ugly.
Rhythm - a repeated pattern of movement or sound. Ex. OW! OW! OW! OW! OW!
Simile - A metaphor that uses like or as compare. Ex. It is hot as a toaster.
Stanza - a group of lines that make up verse. Ex.
Pun - a humorous group of words that can have different meanings. Ex. I'm so punny.
Triplet - three lines of verse that rhymes. Ex. The mouse was mad. The cat was sad. The dog was glad.
Verse - a stanza Ex.
Assonance - the repetition of vowels in a non-rhyming line. Ex. The rain in Spain mainly landed on the plain.
Haiku - a Japanese poem with 3 lines. First line has 5 syllables, next 7, and last five. Ex. I like apple pie. It is delicious and good. I like apple pie.
Ballad - a poem narrating in short stanzas. Ex. "Tam Lin".
Ode - a lyical poem in a form of an address to a particular subject. Ex. a poem that could be sung.
Epic - a long poem about a hero. Ex. "Odyssey"
Elegy - a poem about a serious topic. Ex. a poem about the studies of the brain.
Quatrain - a stanza with 4 lines with alternate rhymes. Ex. I like pie. It is bad. I like to die. I am sad.
Allusion - an indirect way of something. Ex. You could freeze Medusa. (Another way of saying your ugly)
