WW1 started in 1913 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. He was killed by a Serbian man named Gavrilo Princip. Austria immediately declared war on Serbia. All of Europe started to join either side. President Woodrow Wilson told the U.S. to stay out of the war. But unfortunately, in 1915, German ships bombed a British ship (RMS Lusitania) with American civilians inside it. But the most accurate reason why the U.S. entered the war was because of the Zimmerman Telegram. It was a message to Mexico from the Germans, seeking for help. In return, they would get back lands from the U.S. They entered 1 year before the war ended. The Allied Powers (U.K., France, U.S.S.R., and U.S.) blamed Germany for WW1. They were forced to give up land and pay billions for the damage they had caused. They created the League of Nations but it failed due to flaws in the system.
While there were problems outside of the country, there were also domestic problems. On Black Tuesday, the stock market crashed. Many banks were closing with people's savings in there, making people bankrupt. Also near the Dust Bowl (Central Area), the farmers faced massive droughts and huge bug infestations. In Georgia, Boll Weevils ate all the cotton. This was known as the Great Depression. Many of the blame goes to Herbert Hoover, current president at the time. Soon another president was elected: Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He made the New Deal Plan to help all Americans that need help. Some of his New Deal Programs were the Rural Electrification Act, Social Security Act, and the Housing Act. After about 10-15 years, the U.S. was out of the depression because of a huge investment: WW2.
During that time, F.D.R. had polio and could't move his lower half of his body. He had a place to rest, Warm Spring Georgia. It was his resting place and was nicknamed "The Little White House". He claimed that it had "healed" him although it did improve his health. He died in Warm Springs on April 12, 1945 when the WW2 was almost over.
After WW1, Germany was in serious trouble. They were running out of money, so they printed more and more bills. But soon the bills were useless to use. A man named Adolf Hitler came into power in 1933. he was appointed chancellor but acted more of a dictator. He made sure that no one had the right to free speech and press. Hitler used a scapegoat, blaming everything on Jews including the loss of WW1. Hitler claims that Germans were the superior race. He soon attacked Poland during his September Campaign. France and the U.K. declared war on Germany on 1939. Also U.s have been trusting Japan less and less. They eventually stopped trading items, especially oil. U.S. didn't want to be in the war until the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. The Japanese had bombed the U.S. navy port, killing about 2,000 veterans and civilians and many more were injured. In Europe, Italy and Germany continued to invade Eastern Europe and North Africa. Japan were "island hopping", battling on multiple islands. Hitler had started exterminating all the Jews he found. Many were gassed, while others were used for medical experiments (no anesthesia). Also many died from working conditions. Eventually, Italy surrendered and was followed up by Germany. Hitler committed suicide before the war ended. But the war continued on until August 1945, when Americans dropped the Atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That first and only time an atomic bomb has been used. The war ended with peace treaties in Paris. After WW2, the United Nations was created.
During WW2, Hitler started the Holocaust. The Holocaust means destruction or slaughter by fire. He killed 6 million Jews, Gyspies, and many others. Jews were bought to concentration camp and were murdered there. The biggest camps were Auchwitz, Treblinka, and Ebenesse. There were also labor camps and death camps.
